A collection of notes and essays by an anonymous English writer. A 1 v. notebook contains extracts from Homer and other Greek writers; extracts from the art criticism of Sainte-Beuve, Baudelaire, Musset, Gautier and their contemporaries on Delacroix, Ingres and others; and an extensive critique, possibly prepared as a lecture, on E.S. Dallas' "The Gay Science", a study of the pleasure afforded by poetry. Other writings include a draft essay "Art & Criticism," notes on the classification of languages and animal species, and a long essay on solitude, one page of which is on the letterhead stationery of the British Museum Dept. of Zoology.
